The Fire Nation's status as an "evil nation" is held in check by all that, in addition to some excellent gender politics as well. Overall, the standard of living in the Fire Nation is high, and that's not all. This may backfire at times, but overall, it has led to a prosperous and free society that most Water Tribe and Earth Kingdom citizens would envy if they could see for themselves. This volcanic island nation is home to some of the world's most brilliant and forward-thinking politicians, engineers and artists, and the people of the Fire Nation value creativity and energy over rigid tradition and caution.
The Fire Nation is defined by more than the century-long war that Fire Lord Sozin launched back in Avatar Roku's day. In fact, it might be the noblest of them all. For the everyday citizen, the Fire Nation is not so evil. But if the series left it at that, Avatar fans would have a simplistic and one-dimensional experience on their hands, so the creators made sure to go beyond the war itself and balance the nations in other ways, including societal politics. In terms of the war itself, the line is drawn fairly clearly between good and bad, with the Fire Nation being the obvious aggressor and the cause of nearly all the modern world's grief.
